How to Disable Flash Ads in Internet Explorer

Flash ads in web pages can be annoying and can disrupt your browsing experience. Worse, Flash pop-up ads cannot be disabled by most pop-up blockers. Fortunately, Flash ads can be disabled by simply changing the settings in Internet Options. This method also disables all Flash-based games and videos from operating in Internet Explorer. However, the changes can be very quickly and easily reversed if you would like to access these web resources.

Instructions
  • Open Internet Explorer and click Tools > Internet Options.
  • Click the Programs tab. At the bottom of the dialogue box, click "Manage add-ons." In the Show field, click "Add-ons currently running in Internet Explorer."
  • Scroll down until you see "Shockwave Flash Object" and select the entry. Under Settings, click the radio button next to "Disable" to disable the ActiveX control in Internet Explorer. Don't delete the ActiveX control which operates Shockwave Flash Objects. Doing so will cause Internet Explorer to prompt you to install the Flash player every time you load a page which has Flash content. Also, you will have to download Flash and reinstall it to be able to use desirable Flash content in your web browser.
  • Click "OK." Click "OK" again to close Internet Options.
  • Close Internet Explorer and then restart the program. Navigate back to the website which had the Flash animated and pop-up ads. You should now be able to browse the site without these ads. Stationary HTML-based ads will still appear on the site.
  • Reenable the Shockwave Flash Object Add-on whenever you would like to enjoy a Flash-based game or video in Internet Explorer. To do this, click Tools > Internet Options and select the Programs tab. Click "Manage add-ons." In the menu next to "Show:" click "Downloaded ActiveX Controls (32 bit)." In the list marked "Disabled" click "Shockwave Flash Object." Click the radio button next to "Enable" and click "OK" twice to close Internet Options. Don't forget to disable it again when you're finished with your Flash game or video.
